Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
